One Scientific offer a range of allergen testing using PCR, ELISA and chemical analysis. Our analysis is for finished product samples, raw ingredients and swabs.
ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) techniques use antibodies to selectively target allergens or specific marker proteins within a food product for detection. Once the allergen has been selectively bound by the antibody an enzyme linked to these causes a proportional colour change. This change can be measured to give highly sensitive results. The technique is applicable to multiple sample matrices including environmental swabs.
PCR (polymerase chain reaction) techniques require the extraction and amplification of target allergen DNA from samples. This test is highly specific but may not be representative of the quantity of allergenic protein content of a sample. This technique is highly useful when allergenic proteins are difficult to detect by ELISA.
We can offer a unique 9-Nut DNA screen test* to detect all of the nuts (including peanut) listed in the labelling regulations in one single test. This test is low cost, quick and provides you with an opportunity to label ‘Nut-Free’.
Swabbing kits for allergen testing are available free of charge when samples are returned for analysis or are available to buy in packs of 20 swabs. Our swabbing kits include all you need to take environmental swabs for allergen testing. Testing swabs taken from processing machinery and surfaces is essential in the monitoring of cleaning effectiveness. Food manufacturers can make considerable savings by ensuring their environment is thoroughly clean before starting production of a ‘free from’ product. Whilst the end product will still need to be tested, environmental monitoring will reduce the risk of contamination and consequent product recalls.
Food manufacturers must follow the EU directive which requires all pre-packed foods sold in the UK containing certain allergenic ingredients or derivatives to be clearly labelled. Please see the FSA website for the current legislative guidance (FSA website – Food allergy and intolerance).
Our team of scientific experts can provide guidance on allergen testing. Please give us a call to discuss your requirements.
